My father, the late Dr. Bryan would have been 117 years old today. He was a paperboy at the time the Titanic sank, remembered the Hindenburg, and many other historical events. He was a walking library. I visited his grave a few weeks ago and said prayers for his rest and safe return. Everyone who remembers him tells me what a wonderful man he was. Yes, he was that, a kind, gentle soul. He loved sports particularly football. I remember as a little girl watching him listen to his old radio. I remember hearing Dizzy Dean say “high fly ball”! He also loved wrestling during his time: Billy and Bad Boy Hines, Fred Ward, and others. Every Xmas, we bought him a recliner from Raymond Rowe Furniture. He always hated it, but would eventually sit in the chair to watch his games. By the end of the year, he needed another chair because he had “wrestled” the bottom out of it. Every move, every hold, that chair would suffer from my father’s movements; all done while sitting and watching wrestling matches. I loved my dad because he was a fair man. He wanted his children to develop along their natural lines. So it was natural for me to become a professional singer. He hated Church. My father would sleep everytime he attended. My mother finally asked him not to come, but he was glad! His father was a minister, my mother’s father was a minister, and several uncles (on both sides) were ministers. Is that why he hated the Church? My father just thought the biggest hypocrites attended Church and he definitely was not a hypocrite. My father and Dr. Brewer were friends. I remember the drug store and the people that patronized it. I remember Charlie “King” grocery, Mr. & Mrs. Terry (grocery), Miss Wilhemina, Dorothy Lee, The Crescendo Restaurant, Mr. & Mrs. Joe, Mildred Terry (I also knew her as Mrs. Rivers), Mr. Terry and Barry Rivers, Rev. & Mrs. Hannan, The Haygoods, Rev. & Mrs. Rogers, Rev. Lang, Dr. Gallimore, Dr. E. Bryant, Dr. Reid, The Charlestons, Crawford and Jackson, Dr. Coffee, The Merriwethers, Sconiers, The Huffs, Sandy Allen, Mr. Sherald, etc. So many of his friends and he loved them all. So, here’s to a man that loved life. Happy Birthday, Daddy!
